As it approaches its 100th birthday, coming in 2020, plans are already underway to create a supercar worthy of celebrating Mazda’s centenary. Likely called the RX-9, the car, yet to be confirmed, will highlight the brand’s history of renowned sport cars.
While waiting for this beauty to hit sales floors there may be a revival of the rotary engine, the Cosmo Rotary-engine celebrates its 50-year anniversary in 2017, and the automaker has already renewed the trademark on the RX-7 nameplate.
Yasuhiro Aoyama, Mazda’s GM of Global Sales and Marketing confirms the bright future of the company. “This is a very fantastic idea, 2017, [for] a new rotary,” said Aoyama. The return of a rotary-powered RX-7 would pump up the brands image while nodding to Mazda’s past craftsmanship.
A superior supercar would singlehandedly transport the automaker into the future as one of the most competitive brands. Having a history of fantastic vehicles and sporting credibility will keep Mazda a top runner in the industry.
