The History of Memorial Day

Flags in front of graves in cemetary on Memorial Day

Graves of fallen service members decorated with flags for Memorial Day

An important holiday is coming up this weekend. Memorial Day is a day to honor service members who died while protecting our freedoms. It also unofficially marks the beginning of summer. Most Americans celebrate by visiting cemeteries or memorials or participating in family gatherings or parades.  But do you know the history of Memorial Day?

The first observation of Memorial Day (originally Decoration Day) was on May 30, 1868. James Garfield spoke at Arlington National Cemetary and thousands of gatherers helped to decorate the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers, both Union and Confederate, with flowers, wreaths, and flags. However, this was only the holiday’s first national recognition. It was actually inspired by smaller local observances that took place in towns across the country in the years after the Civil War.

Fun fact: New York was the first state to make Memorial Day a legal holiday!

Following World War 1, it became known as a day to honor those who perished in any American war and was made a national holiday. In 1971, Congress established that day would be observed on the last Monday of May, solidifying the Memorial Day we celebrate today.

Award-Winning CX-9 Engine: Added Gas Mileage, Added Power

award-winning CX-9 engine

Mazda recently received an award for its incredible performance and engineering. Specifically, this award came from WardsAuto for the 2.5-liter DOHC Turbocharged I-4 engine found under the hood of the Mazda CX-9. This is not only an honor, but it demonstrates the incredible capabilities of the new CX-9.

According to WardsAuto, the new engine is made from aluminum alloy and it provides up to 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, while also earning up to 27 mpg on the highway. This new engine enabled the engineers to cut approximately 250 pounds from the previous generation, and it also increased gas mileage by a whopping 25%. It’s no wonder this award-winning CX-9 engine is getting so much attention.

“Most turbocharged gasoline engines use enrichment very early on, leading to fuel economy that rarely meets the EPA-estimated numbers,” says Kelvin Hiraishi, director of engineering, Mazda. “While the SKYACTIV 2.5T’s cooled EGR doesn’t improve the catalog (official) fuel economy numbers, it does pay dividends for customers to achieve greater real-world efficiency.”

Perhaps one of the most impressive features is the Dynamic Pressure Turbo System. Though this engine is a four-cylinder, with fewer cylinders than the previous V6, it nevertheless maintains power thanks to a tuned turbo system. This engine optimizes exhaust to increase power without sacrificing fuel economy. This is just one way the new CX-9 sets itself apart.

Mazda - MX-5 Miata RF FeaturesThe RF will come in three trim levels, including the Launch Edition, the Grand Touring, and the Club. All three will be available with both manual and automatic transmission options from Mazda’s innovative SKYACTIV parts lineup.

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF features carry over from its soft-top counterpart, the award-winning convertible Miata, but there are a few new features drivers will love. The RF will come with a full-color 4.6-inch TFT gauge for incredible image quality, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert in the Club trim, and two new paint color options.

Opting for the sportier Club trim gets you aerodynamic body extensions and limited slip differential on the manual, plus a bunch of available manual-only performance upgrades like Brembo brakes and lightweight wheels.

Black Friday Parking and Driving Tips

The prospect of driving and parking on Black Friday is daunting, but it doesn’t have to be impossible. Just follow these tips and you can remove this particular source of stress from an already stressful day.

The best way to keep from making dangerous decisions on Black Friday is to plan everything in advance. You’ll already be keyed up and wanting to get the best deals as soon as possible—if you don’t know where you want to go next or where to get those deals, you might end up driving recklessly. Plus, everyone else is going to be the exact same way—don’t contribute to the danger.

Parking Garage - Black Friday ParkingOnce you’ve planned your route, download helpful map apps like Waze with real-time traffic updates so you know where roads will be most backed up and you can try to find an alternate route. You’ll get to your destination faster and with lower chance of collision.

Coffee, coffee, coffee. If you’re going to be up all night and then getting behind the wheel, you have to keep yourself awake. Make sure you stop to eat, too!

When it comes to parking, don’t fight for a spot near the front. Park far enough away that you aren’t in a heavy foot traffic spot—this not only makes you less likely to hit someone when you pull out but also means you can leave more quickly and easily than the folks near the entrance.

Black Friday parking and driving is easy when you’re prepared and watchful. Stay safe!

Mazda Now Accepting Preorders for Hardtop MX-5 Miata

hardtop MX-5 MiataLike convertibles? Of course you do. With their association with free-spirited leisure and high-end luxury, owning a convertible sports car is on most people’s bucket lists. A favorite among drivers is the Mazda MX-5 Miata, with its relatively affordable price in comparison to other sporty, luxurious convertibles and its lightweight, zippy performance. However, the fact of the matter is that convertibles—with their noisy tops and often-cramped interiors—are often impractical for daily life, which is why the new hardtop MX-5 Miata—called the RF—is such a ground-breaking addition to Mazda’s lineup.

Preorders for the MX-5 Miata RF began recently on September 26th, with the first 1,000 models coming in a special Launch Edition. Long-time loyal Mazda fans get first dibs on the Launch Edition models, having received personalized codes with a limited-time offer attached. Of course, even if you don’t need the Launch Edition, the release of the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is a big moment for the brand. Mazda representatives predict that the RF will sell more than the standard MX-5 Miata due to the fact that its hard convertible top will reduce wind noise and give the model more of an aerodynamic coupe feel when the top is up.

The hardtop MX-5 Miata RF Launch Edition went on sale to the general public on October 3rd, provided any of them were left. The 25th Anniversary Edition of the standard MX-5 Miata sold out in less than ten minutes back in 2014, after all.

Experience Haunted Excursions on the Adirondack Scenic Railway

Adirondack Scenic Railway

While it isn’t exclusively a Halloween attraction, once a month the Adirondack Scenic Railway invites passengers to come for a ride in the evening, when it takes passengers on a two-hour round trip from Thendara Station to tell ghostly stories of crime, murder, and tragedy. Referred to as the Haunted History Evening Excursion, the next of these events falls on October 22nd. So if you’re looking to get in the Halloween spirit, this is a great, unique experience.

The stories told by attendants on the scenic passenger train are derived from the book Haunted Old Forge, which details the spirits lingering on the slopes of the Adirondack Mountains. Beware, however; you’ll be lead out into the heart of the action. Passengers will be required to disembark the train and follow the guide through the wilderness on the mountains, supposedly surrounded by the spirits of legend discussed by the guide. The story will be told by authors Dennis Webster and Bernadette Peck, as well as acting troupe the Players of Utica.

In the fall, the Adirondack Scenic Railway departs for this haunted adventure at 7:00pm, so make sure to arrive before then and dress appropriately for the weather. Coach ticket rates are $25 per person. The railway also recommends proper footwear for walking, bug spray, and perhaps even a flashlight—and don’t forget some extra cash for the gift shop so you can bring home a souvenir.

Safety Tips for Sharing the Road with Motorcycles

Sharing the road with motorcycles can be a little scary—motorcycles are a lot smaller than cars, tend to weave around more, and easily hide in blind spots. Just follow these tips to keep yourself and the motorcyclists around you safe.

Sharing the road with MotorcyclesAgain: remember your blind spots. A lot more motorcycles are on the road during the summer, so checking your blind spots extra carefully before switching lanes is a must. You should also be extra cautious when switching lanes, especially on the highway, as you’ll create a gust of wind that can knock a motorcycle over if you do it too close. Put plenty of space between you and a motorcycle before you pass it.

If you’re driving behind a motorcycle, put more space than you usually would between yourself and the bike. If you have to stop suddenly, you don’t want to be anywhere near close enough to hit it—whereas tapping the rear of a car in front of you can cause a little damage, running into a motorcycle can be fatal to the rider.

Be careful at intersections, since it can be difficult to tell where and when motorcycles are turning. Any time you make a left turn, keep an eye out for approaching bikes—this is a major cause of accidents for motorcycles.

Never forget that we all have to share the road safely!
